I attended Emory 05-09, and I don’t know if the times had just changed by then, but the article from the Wheel is (bad) subculture journalism. There was no doubt that some kids dressed expensively, but this was MAYBE 10-15% of the population.

The flashy dressers are selected for interviews because they stand out the most and because of interviewer bias.

I’ve seen more materialism at Florida state schools to be honest.

That jumper was probably under the influence of the endemic despair of cruise ships that David Foster Wallace describes so well in “A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again”.

I do think his head or brain may have been cryo’ed. I heard a reference to that shortly after the death. However it may not have been likely after the delay from autopsy(ies).

It seems a lot of stuff we liked got “mainstreamed.” I still can’t find “Boy’s Life” on the tubes. But I did find Pastiche.

The Fall also covered The Monks version of Monk Theme. About a year after I discovered The Monks on YouTube(!) NPR did a feature.

I’m getting really mainstream as I age.
