The Incredulous Pithecanthrope (The IP for short), is Brian Francis Coffey, a Government historian who resides in Atlanta, GA  U.S.A.

The term “Incredulous Pithecanthrope” is meant to evoke a a time-wandering hominid from the past, specifically, Pithecanthropus, more commonly known as “Java Man.” 

The IP is “incredulous” at what he sees these later hominids known as humans have evolved to become; hence his frequent outcry of “What The Fuck?” which is abreviated as the now common “WTF?”  Both the exclamation point and the question mark are used for emphasis. 

The IP was at first confused because he thought evolution was supposed to improve a species over time, but he came to realize that less hair and bigger brains don’t always indicate more “logical” or “rational” behavior. 

Through the character of The IP, blogger Brian uses contemporary culture and news events to expose what he sees as a “Devolution” of our species, especially as manifest in what The IP variously calls “Fucktards,” “Republitards,” and “Asstards.”  The latter are usually of the Neocon, religious-right, or New Age persuasions.
